The Apartment

Location:
Pratola Peligna, Province of L'Aquila, Region of Abruzzo
Capacity: 2-4 persons (can accommodate up to 6)
Cost: $800-$850 Cdn per week

The apartment is located on the top two floors of a handsome old three-storey house belonging to the Puglielli family. It is believed that the house dates back to the 1860's and was purchased by the family in the 1920's. Each floor in the house would have been a family apartment.

During the Second World War the Germans occupied the town and actually took over the lower floors, perhaps to house the officers or use as a local headquarters. Today the top two floors have been renovated to create a spacious two bedroom apartment with a delightful rooftop terrace.

On the top floor is the large sunny dining room with beautiful french doors opening onto small balconies overlooking the street below.

The bright, fully equipped kitchen has a gas stove and full-size fridge. Guests can, therefore, choose to enjoy cooking for themselves and experience shopping in the local markets and stores.

Also on the top floor is a large newly furnished bedroom with a queen-size bed.

The bathroom, with shower, is on the landing below. On the floor below is a second bedroom, with queen-size bed, and the lounge, with TV and a pullout sofa.

Our favourite spot in the house is the rooftop terrace with a breathtaking panoramic view of the mountains and the tiled rooftops and church steeples of the town. Immediately to the North is Mont Morrone and depending on the time of year the peaks may be snow covered. At night the lights of the village of Roccacasale can be seen twinkling on the side of the mountain. On a clear day you can catch a glimpse of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Maiella, the two tallest mountains in the Appenines.

The terrace is a perfect spot to relax under the umbrella and read a book or just sit and watch the swallows swooping from house to house and listen for the occasional chime of the church bells and the train whistle as it pulls into the station.
